CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa, January 5/PRNewswire/ -- RepHresh Vaginal Gel has been approved as a Class IIa medical device for the prevention and treatment of bacterial vaginosis (BV) in the EU. Its patent-protected formula adheres to the vaginal epithelium for 3 days per use, normalizing pH to a healthy 4.5 or less. BV cannot develop in a vaginal environment with a pH of 4.5 or less. It is the only product of its kind available without a prescription.
Many women assume that vaginal discomforts stem primarily from yeast infections. In fact, nearly half of all vaginal infections are BV, a result of bacterial overgrowth in the vagina.
"Bacterial vaginosis symptoms are similar to those of yeast infections -- itching, burning, dryness or soreness and general vaginal discomfort," said Dr. Machelle M. Seibel, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Massachusetts.
In a study published by the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, women tested for genital complaints had the following incidence rates:
- 46% Bacterial Vaginosis - 29% Yeast Infection - 25% Chlamydia/Trichomoniasis/Other
"It's easy for women to confuse yeast infections with BV," said Dr. Seibel. "However, while yeast infections usually aren't risky, BV increases the risk of pre-term birth, early miscarriage, acquiring sexually transmitted diseases, and pelvic inflammatory disease."
RepHresh is safe for long-term use for women who are pregnant, suffer from recurrent BV, or who have had hysterectomies -- a group prone to vaginal infection.
"We are pleased to have gained approval for this product. It will help millions of women improve their vaginal health," said Giacomo Tormene, President & Managing Director for Lil' Drug Store International. "We anticipate a strong response from physicians, pharmacists and consumers throughout the world."
Lil' Drug Store Products, headquartered in Cedar Rapids, Iowa - USA, is a privately held company, and is the maker of RepHresh.
