Darmstadt, Germany, July 3, 2009 – Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, announced today that François Naef was appointed as Group General Counsel and Head of Corporate Legal and Compliance effective July 22. He succeeds Dr. Tilman Schmidt-Lorenz, who died suddenly in April 2009.
Patents & Scientific Information, headed by Dr. Wolfgang Losert and formerly a part of Corporate Legal & Intellectual Property, will be a separate organizational unit. Naef and Losert will both report directly to the Chairman of the Executive Board, Dr. Karl-Ludwig Kley.
François Naef (47) holds a law degree and a master's degree in European Law from the Geneva University as well as a qualification as attorney-at-law from the State of Geneva. After several years as a lawyer, Naef joined the Swiss biopharmaceutical company Serono in 1988 and held various positions with increasing responsibilities, including General Counsel and Corporate Secretary. After Merck's acquisition of Serono in 2007, he served as Head of Legal, Human Resources and Communications for the division Merck Serono and a member of the Merck Serono Executive Management Board.
